Excellence Of Science Project

This year students of Scoil Eoin Phoil II are taking part in the Discovery Science Project. The main aim of the project is to make science fun and interesting for all children.

The project consists of four steps:

1 Set up and keep a Discovery Log / Prescribed Activities

Two classes from the school are participating in this aspect of the project. Both Mr. Finnerty’s third class and Ms. Doyle’s fifth class. In the discovery log the children keep a record of all the experiments they complete during the year, as well as documenting all the other aspects of the project.

2 a)Visit A DPS Discover Centre or
   b) Invite a scientist to speak to the class

Science

Third class visited the National Stud and Japanese Gardens in Kildare for their school tour.
Fourth and fifth class invited the Enfo officer to speak to their class about various aspects of the environment and recycling.

3 Participate in a Science Event
The school held a Science Open day when parents and members of the local community were invited into the school to view some of the results of the experiments that the children were involved in.

4 Additional Activities

  • This year we registered to participate in the Greenschool project in an effort to make the school more environmentally friendly and efficient.
  • Each of the classes in the school helped to set up the school website.
  • The school subscribed to the science.ie monthly newsletter.
  • The school participated in a competition, run by Offaly County Council, to design make an animal, from the local natural environment out of recycled materials. We invited a local artist in to facilitate this art project and a group of students designed and constructed a buzzard. Scoil Eoin Phoil II was delighted to be the overall winner of this competition.
